Presented here in a new translation, with a historical introduction by the translators, Fear and Trembling and Repetition are the most poetic and personal of Søren Kierkegaard's pseudonymous writings. That is actually the lesson of Job, as far as anyone can tell the lesson (it's a very confusing book). After reading the preface to Either/Or, as soon as I began the “Diapsalmata,” the section from which I draw the following excerpts, I was struck. The editor refers to the first set of writing as the writings of “A,” in light of the fact that he has no name for the author.
